Dr. Kovner’s interest in Tropical Medicine started in 1963 when he enlisted in the United States Public Health Service to serve with the Peace Corps in Venezuela. In preparation for his assignment he received special training in Tropical Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his two years in Venezuela he became proficient in preventive medicine, occupational medicine and the recognition and treatment of tropical diseases.


In the early 1980s Dr. Kovner established the Travelers Immunization Center in Studio City, California, to prepare tourists, television and motion picture crews, journalists, international business travelers and construction workers, missionaries, adventure travelers, reality TV crews and participants, stunt men and women and even elephant wranglers for visits and assignments to developing countries.

He now enjoys the tranquil life of San Diego North County and continues his Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health practice.

The unique aspect of Dr. Kovner’s practice is he visits homes and offices for pre-travel preparation and consultation. Dr. Kovner also works with the traveler’s personal physician to provide continuity of care.

Businesses with activities in developing countries are provided with risk management and consultation to maximize the effectiveness of offshore assignments. Medical preparation for travel at the home or workplace minimizes the stress of pre-travel preparation.
